The Gayatri is a universal prayer upheld in the Vedas. It is addressed to the indwelling  and Infinite Divine which has been given the name 'Savita,' meaning 'that from which all this is born.”

Srî Swâmi Shivânanda wrote: "Of all the mantras, the supreme and the most potent power of powers is the great, glorious Gayatri Mantra."

In Atharva Veda (19/71/1) it is said that Gayatri meditation blesses its devotee with a long healthy life, a strong vital force (Prana), divine energy, fame, wealth and God Realization.

The Meaning

"O Absolute Creator of the three dimensions,
we contemplate upon thy effulgent light.
May our intellect and mind be illuminated
by your eternal divine radiance”

You can chant this mantra during sunrise or sunset. My belief is that if you have a pure heart you can chant the mantra anytime and anywhere. The most important element is the intention.
