The 4th Agreement : Always Do Your Best
“Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret?”
This agreement is self explanatory. However honesty is the key element in this agreement. Doing your best comes from loving something you do, the act should be filled with love, and then the best will come naturally.
- Be Honest with yourself. The first agreement solidifies this statement. Being impeccable with your word will enable you to understand what you need to say YES or NO to. Love what you do and when love is in the equation then the best will follow suit. No holds barred. You must have experienced this, haven’t you?
- If you have to do something that you don’t absolutely love, then do your best to change your mind and change your perspective about the job that has to be done. Sometimes doing something that you don’t love can help people around you, or that the need of your action is greater than your selfish need to do something else. This is when you think of the greater good and make the choice to embrace and practice doing your best in all circumstances.
- Doing your best definitely does not mean doing it for the approval of others. Simplify. Simplify. Simplify. One of the first agreements we make with society is to gain external approval from them. We then internalize this need for approval and create our own Judge according to the judgment of the world/society. You can fire this judge and appoint your heart of hearts to make new agreements. This is a process in itself and may take some time. Still, do your best.
- Think about Nature. Nature is naturally doing her best in all circumstances. I invite you to take a walk today, preferably by yourself and ruminate about the beauty and grace of nature. Come home and write down one key element your learned from her pertaining to doing your best. Do share in the comments below. I look forward to hearing from you.
